Starting with Shadow of War we have 67FPS average, just 1FPS above the RTX 2070 SUPER FE, and a much higher 12FPS faster than the RX 5700 XT at Exodus hangs in there with 37FPS average, virtually identical to the 36FPS of the previous-gen GTX 1080 Ti. If you're a 1440p monitor owner at 60Hz then this is the perfect card for you, but if you're playing esports-style games like Apex Legends, Overwatch, League of Legends, CS:GO then the RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING OC is going to be absolutely fine. You'll reach 100FPS+ average in all of those games with some in-game visual setting tweaks. GIGABYTE also has your back when it comes to 4K gaming if you want to jump into some high-end AAA games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro Exodus, and many others offering 60FPS or so. When Nvidia's original GeForce RTX 2060 launched in January of this year, many were left scratching their heads at why the card existed in the first place. Until today, it was the latest RTX-family graphics card to be released by the company, hitting shelves almost five months after the initial RTX launch. Now, six months later, we have the release of the $399 Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super, a midrange card that offers above-average performance combined with a competitive price point. It's a strong contender in its price zone, though in some scenarios, saving $120 or so and opting for a card based on the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti makes more sense, depending on the types of gaming you plan to do after your next card upgrade or PC build. Nvidia Swings for the (AAA League) Bleachers We've already published a breakdown of the the full situation surrounding the announcement and launch of Super cards in our review of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, but as a brief recap: This card shares much in common, on a specifications level, with the original GeForce RTX 2070. Though Nvidia would not verify my theory, it's likely that this card is based on the same die as that (non-Super) GeForce RTX 2070, just using versions stepped down a bit due to silicon yields. You Can Trust Our Reviews Again: This is an educated guess based on the specs of the cards involved. Now, this is common practice in the CPU and GPU world, and not a bad thing by any means. Manufacturing CPUs or GPUs inevitably means ending up with some samples that outperform, some that nail the expected spec, and some that don't quite reach it. That may well be what's at play here, with Nvidia getting different yields from its GPUs that it was a year ago. And that may be giving it more flexibility in how to market and produce its RTX line. Similar Products That's good, given the current state of play. The original RTX 2060 was a fine card, but it had a bit of an identity problem, especially once the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, which came later, debuted. That's mainly because many buyers and industry followers strained to see the point in including ray-tracing (RT) cores—one of the key elements that set the RTX cards apart—on a card that wouldn't be able to handle ray tracing at 60 frames per second (fps) or more in the first place, Nvidia's DLSS tech notwithstanding. As of July 2019, the Steam Hardware Survey(Opens in a new window) says that only a minute percent of those who report into the pool are using an RTX 2060, and it's to be expected that an even smaller segment of those users actually try to activate ray tracing on the limited number of games it's currently available in. The RTX 2070, on the other hand, is just powerful enough to work as both a AAA workhorse with an ordinary 60Hz monitor and a card that will keep your high-refresh-rate monitor happy, too, with esports titles. So if the RTX 2060 Super actually is just a slightly restrained RTX 2070, then its $399 price might make it worth the cost to anyone who was on the fence until now. Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super vs. Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 The only way you can really gain a sense of context for the Super line is to see the specs of these cards side-by-side with the other card they're coming from or moving into the zone of. So here, for starters, is the new RTX 2060 Super up against the last-gen RTX 2070... The numbers speak for themselves: If you run one stable overclock on this card (like I managed to do, as I'll discuss later on in this review), there's almost nothing stopping you from turning your RTX 2060 Super into a card that's very much a GeForce RTX 2070 impersonator. Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super vs. Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Then there's this comparison, something of an RTX 2060 before-and-after snapshot. The card in the left column is the suggested reference version of the original RTX 2060, which started in third-party cards at $349 and will stay on the market alongside the RTX 2060 Super, according to Nvidia... Looking at past and present specs, the argument that the RTX 2060 Super is derived from the stock RTX 2060 looks wafer-thin, no pun intended. The RTX 2060 Super is built on the TU106-410-A1 die, while the RTX 2070 runs off the TU106-400A-A1 die. They both use 175 watts of power through one eight-pin connector, both feature identical transistor counts, and they have identical memory-bus widths/bandwidth caps. Now, Nvidia notes that these are not the same die, and that the RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070 Super, and RTX 2080 Super all represent improvements to their own die classes. Whatever the actual manufacturing nitty-gritty and GPU geneaology here, it's clear that given the spec-out, the RTX 2060 Super is much closer kin to an original RTX 2070 than to the original RTX 2060. Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti At $399, the GeForce RTX 2060 Super hovers in the high end of what esports-focused cards should cost, while the $ GeForce GTX 1660 Ti seems to hit a sweet spot that focuses all of Turing's benefits directly into high-refresh gaming applications, for folks for whom that's the key concern. Here, you see quite a bit of differences in specs to note, the most obvious of which in the GTX 1660 Ti are the lesser power requirements, the lower CUDA processor count, and (not charted) the complete lack of RT or Tensor cores. In the GTX 1660 Ti, Nvidia shaved off a lot of capabilities from its lowest-end RTX card to tackle the lightweight division in GPUs, but, for the most part, it whipped up a strong recommendation for anyone shopping for strong 1080p high-refresh esports gaming performance in a card under $300. Mirror, Mirror on the Card, Who's Fastest of Them All? Feel like you saw this card somewhere else before? You might be one of the few people that ever got hands on the RTX 2060 Founders Edition before it went out of stock after just a few weeks on sale. Indeed, the RTX 2060 Founders Edition might have also been one of the lowest stock runs of any graphics card in recent memory. If you blinked, you missed it, though RTX 2060 cards from Nvidia's partner card makers are available in abundance at this writing. I'd say that the Supers share with the original RTX Founders Edition cards some of the classiest card chassis in the business now or in any year... The solid, almost-gunmetal-gray shell is accented this time around with a shiny mirror panel between the fans, complete with a green badge that denotes this card's "super" capabilities. The card is also one of only two in the official Nvidia RTX line to use an end-outward-facing power connector. Note: The RTX 2060 Super requires an eight-pin connector, while the original RTX 2060 only needed a six-pin. The DVI-D could be a pleasant surprise if you have an older, but beloved, 60Hz monitor, as the port has been mostly supplanted these days by HDMI and DisplayPort on higher-end video cards due to its resolution limitations. Testing: For the Moment, Nvidia vs. Nvidia PC Labs ran the RTX 2060 Super card through a series of DirectX 11- and 12-based synthetic and real-world benchmarks. Our test rig is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8700K processor, 16GB of DDR4 memory, a solid-state boot drive, and an Aorus Z370 Gaming 7 motherboard. For our benchmark results, we wanted to focus some of our efforts on the esports abilities of this card, but we also ran it through the rest of our standard benchmarks, which test a card's abilities to handle AAA games at the highest possible quality settings. Synthetic Benchmarks 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra Synthetic benchmarks can be good predictors of real-world gaming performance. Futuremark's circa-2013 Fire Strike Ultra is still a go-to for simulating 4K-based gaming. We're looking only at the test's Graphics Subscore (which isolates the GPU's contribution), not the Overall Score. Here, the GeForce RTX 2060 Super holds strong against any other boards that come close in price, a trend that will continue throughout the rest of the benches. 3DMark Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme This is Futuremark's DirectX 12-enabled benchmark for predicting the performance of DirectX 12-enabled games. It uses major features of the API, including asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading. In this trial, the RTX 2060 Super actually beats the MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Armor, and comes within 13 percent of the RTX 2070 Super on Time Spy Extreme. Unigine Superposition Our last synthetic benchmark is Unigine's 2017 release, Superposition. This benchmark does incorporate ray tracing, but it's done in software, not hardware, and thus doesn't utilize the ray-tracing (RT) cores of the RTX 20 series. This is a test that generally shows why you might want a card like the RTX 2070 Super over a GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 2060 Super if you just bought a new 60Hz 4K gaming monitor. Real-World Gaming The following benchmarks are games that you can actually play. The charts themselves detail the settings we used (typically the highest in-game preset and, if available, DirectX 12). A quick note: Though most of our game tests are maxed out in graphical fidelity to push the cards to their limit, multiplayer gaming is all about maintaining the best balance between graphical fidelity and frame rate. As such, we've kept the test sequences for Apex Legends, CS:GO, and Rainbow Six: Siege tuned to the best combination of necessary improvements in settings (higher anti-aliasing and lower shadows, for example), while still trying to keep frame rates for 1080p games above that coveted 120Hz or 144Hz mark for high-refresh monitors. Playing at the more common 60Hz is a cinch with these games using a card of this caliber. Rise of the Tomb Raider The 2015 predecessor to Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still a great benchmark. In AAA gaming, the RTX 2060 Super, like the original, is not made for smooth 60fps 4K play, but neither is any other card at or below the $400 mark. Far Cry 5 and Far Cry Primal The fourth and fifth installments in the Far Cry series are based on DirectX 11, but still looping the benchmark charts together here since the games play out similarly in a relative sense. Here is where things got surprising. Not only was the RTX 2060 Super keeping up with the RTX 2070 Super, it almost outpaced an MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio PC Labs tested (not charted here). Final Fantasy XV We'll take a respite from frame-rate-based benchmarks for a moment to look at Final Fantasy XV. Here the RTX 2060 Super fell back in line with its spec, despite losing a few battles to the MSI 2070 Armor in a few key resolutions by small measures. Legacy Games These three games still offer a AAA gaming experience, despite being more than a few years old by this point. The legacy tests include runs of Hitman: Absolution, Tomb Raider (2013), and Bioshock: Infinite, the last being a game that no one asked to be still as well-optimized as it is in 2019. Here the RTX 2060 Super was just barely bested by the RTX 2070 on Hitman, but overtook it completely by the time Bioshock: Infinite benches were plugged in. World of Tanks Encore This is another non-fps-based benchmark that's available as a free download. It's not super-demanding, but it's still a reliable test. Razor-thin wins for the 2060 Super over MSI's 2070 here, but clear gains over the GTX 1660 Ti too. The GTX 1660 Ti will prove itself to be a situational pickup later in this bout. Apex Legends Apex Legends is the newest, most exciting battle royale on the planet, and it's gaining adherents by the millions. These numbers may be a bit deceiving, as Apex is one of a few multiplayer titles that is seeing constant improvement and optimization over the months, while also uncapping the limiter that kept even the fastest cards locked to 144fps maximum. Because the game is based on the Source engine (known for its optimization in games like the one mentioned below), we'd imagine Apex Legends will only continue to get faster in weaker cards as the months and years wear on. Counter Strike: Global Offensive Speaking of one of the oldest, yet still most popular, online games around the globe, Counter Strike: Global Offensive is the latest in a long line of titles that have changed almost nothing about their core gameplay since 1999...and gamers wouldn't have it any other way. The engine is considered one of the best optimized in all of PC gaming, which makes it easy to see major gaps in any one card's abilities versus another's. Though the RTX 2060 Super takes a win over the GTX 1660 Ti here, it doesn't do so by a margin that's meaningful for each resolution. The GTX 1660 Ti can still do CS:GO at above 240Hz in 1080p, 165Hz in 1440p, and 144Hz in 4K. In theory you could spend $899 on an Acer Predator XB3 monitor, plus another $279 on this GTX 1660 Ti or a similar one, and still be able to run CS:GO in 4K at 144Hz without an issue. Rainbow Six: Siege Finally, there's Rainbow Six: Siege. Despite the game languishing in bugs and server problems during its first year, Ubisoft has worked hard on its competitor to CS:GO to make it one of the most-played games on the Steam platform, with 45 million players and growing as of early 2019. Here's where things get confusing. The MSI GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X 6G, despite being $120 cheaper than the RTX 2070 Super, actually beats it in all three resolutions on this game. The Super also scores lower than its non-Super counterpart, despite my testing it through five runs on 1440p. This might just be an early-driver issue that will get shaken out by release, and we'll come back to test if any differences are noticed in the future. Ray Tracing & Overclocking When in-game ray tracing first hit the scene, a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti could barely stomach delivering fast enough frame rates at high resolutions and detail settings, let alone a card as low on the Turing totem pole as the RTX 2060. The story remains much the same here, save for a few edge cases. When I pushed the card through our Shadow of the Tomb Raider test with both ray tracing and DLSS turned on, the card comfortably kept above 60fps at 1440p, but dipped into the 50fps range once we moved up to 4K. That's a fine showing if you're not dead-set on 60fps at 4K. I then turned to some overclocking. During my trials of the GeForce RTX 2060 Super, I found that the card was able to withstand a threshold of 175Hz on the boost clock speed, and 450MHz of boost on the memory clocks, which represents about a 10 percent increase overall. This was very similar to the overclocking overhead I observed with the RTX 2070 Super. During these tests, the RTX 2060 Super both met and exceeded the numbers set by the original RTX 2070 by just around 10 percent, proving further that if you want a card that is in essence the equivalent of a discounted last-generation ( non-Super) RTX 2070, you might get something even a little better with the RTX 2060 Super, as long as you're comfortable with the tweakage required by overclocking your card. A Peek at the Heat RTX cards have never been known for their extreme heat efficiency, given that each die contains three separate kinds of cores running complex processes right next to each other. But we were pleasantly surprised to see that even during a 10-minute stress test of the 3DMark Port Royal benchmark, the RTX 2060 Super never poked above 74 degrees C. Then we ran our FLIR imaging test... This is an unscientific look, but with the side of the chassis off, nearly all the heat generated by the GPU was being wicked off by the backplate, and while a small amount emanated around the card, a good amount also passed through the vents located on the card's backplane, facing out of the case. I saw a similar scheme on the RTX 2070 Super, which suggests that both cards may have seen an upgrade to their cooling systems underneath this shroud. An RTX 2070 by Any Other Name... As I mentioned in my review of the RTX 2070 Super, offering better performance at a lower cost by whatever means is always a winner. Nvidia is still proving it can compete on price when it wants to, or is forced to; AMD's first "Navi" cards roll out this coming weekend. And the Nvidia card-partner ecosystem has proven that it offers a wide enough variety of options that almost no gamer has an excuse to pass up, depending on the amount he or she has to spend on a new PC upgrade. In the RTX 2060 Super, Nvidia is offering a healthy enough upgrade from the RTX 2060, even if nothing revolutionary is at play under the card shroud. It's a price play, plain and simple. But what the RTX 2060 Super offers most of all is a greater variety of choice in the RTX market, with more mid-level enthusiast cards that won't break the bank. Who knows? The rollout of the RTX 2060 Super might well eventually push down the prices of partner-card non-Super RTX 2060 cards a bit to create some daylight between. Of course, then, you have the GTX 1660 Ti to contend with. And if you want a card that shaves off everything you don't need simply to hit above 100fps in 1080p on titles like Rainbow Six: Siege or CS:GO, the GTX 1660 Ti is more than enough to handle your needs. But the RTX 2060 Super has its niche. If you want something slightly more expensive that can comfortably play a good number of AAA games at 4K and 60Hz, costs bit less than the RTX 2070 did at launch, and can ray-trace at lower resolutons, then the RTX 2060 Super is an attractive new entry into the increasingly crowded midrange-card stakes. And when AMD rolls out its Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX 5700 in a few days, we'll see just how crowded the top picks in this market segment is.
